Dr. Nikolaos Th. Skoulikidis has research interests on hydrogeochemistry, ecological status assessment, biogeochemical processes, functional ecosystem approaches and integrated river basin management. He headed the Environmental Research & Technology Dept. of the technology transfer company Intratech Ltd (1990-94), since 1995 he has been working as a researcher in HCMR and since 2008 as a research director. He has participated in 65 national and international projects and coordinated 22 (14 international) projects on behalf of HCMR. He has contributed 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 6 book chapters and has contributed 298 other publications.

Eleni Kalogianni

Dr Eleni Kalogianni obtained her degree in Biology (1986) and her doctoral title in Zoology (1991) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. During 1988-1990 she has held a position as a Research Assistant at the Institute for Neurobiology, Free University of Berlin, Germany. During 1992-1995, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK. Since 2001, she is a Research Associate at the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). Her research interests include Biodiversity conservation, Ecology, biology and diet of endemic freshwater fish species and their interactions with alien species. She has participated in 14 national and international projects and co-ordinated one EU project. She has contributed 17 papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored one book and more than 40 other publications, and authored/co-authored 24 technical reports.

He has research interests on Hydrology, Hydrochemical quality of inland waters, Soil nutrients and processes, Soil erosion, Biogeochemical processes, Abiotic/biotic interactions, Risk assessment and Integrated River Basin Management, Soil research and desertification, Water resources, Soil, Wild Fires, Ecological quality assessment, Biogeochemistry. He was a member of numerous valuation committees dealing with projects of the 7th Framework Programme. He has contributed 7 papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as 11 other publications (i.e. conference proceedings, special publications, posters) and participated in 5 different European projects. Elias Dimitriou

Elias Dimitriou has research interests on hydrodynamic modeling, water resources management planning, groundwater vulnerability and risk assessment, wetland hydrology and biodiversity conservation. In 2007, he became a permanent Researcher at the Institute of Inland Waters (HCMR) and since then he participated in 14 national and international research projects and coordinated 12 additional ones. He has contributed 26 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 2 book chapters, as well as more than 70 other publications (i.e. conference proceedings, special publications, newspaper and magazine articles) and co-authored 22 technical reports.

During the last ten years, he has held a position as a special research scientist in freshwater ecology. He has research interests on taxonomy and ecophysiology on freshwater and coastal zone fauna. Since 2002, he has been a research associate in the Institute of Inland Waters (since 2012 Institute of Marine Biological Resources and inland Waters) and from 2012 he is the Head of the Laboratory of Benthic Ecology. He has research interests on Freshwater Ecology and Pollution, Ecotoxicology, Ecology and Taxonomy of Aquatic Invertebrates with specialization on caddisflies, as well as in the Conservation and Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems including rivers, lakes, ponds and wetlands.
He has participated in 18 national and international projects. He has organized-coordinated 2 Workshops. He has served as an invited reviewer in more than 7 international peer review journals.
He has contributed with 21 papers in peer-reviewed journals, he is a co-editor of a book in production (The Rivers of Greece: Evolution, Current Status and Perspectives) with 2 book chapter contributions, as well as more than 57 other publications (i.e., conference proceedings, special publications, newspaper and magazines) and co-authored 24 technical reports.

Theodora Kouvarda

BSc in Environmental Studies, Department of Environment, University of Aegean. MSc in Pollution and Environmental Control, School of Biological Sciences, University of Manchester, UK. River Habitat Survey (RHS) implementation (Accreditation No HP61 – Environment Agency, May 2002). She has held a position as a research associate in the institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters during the last thirteen years. Research interests on implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EU) on the Greek rivers, reference conditions and classification of surface inland waters, evaluation of the ecological status of Greek rivers, identification and classification of fresh water benthic macroinvertebrates, environmental and integrated River Basin Management and environmental education. She has participated in approximately 20 national and international projects. She has contributed in two papers in scientific journals, as well as approximately ten other publications.

From November 1999 until today, she has held a position as a Specialized Technical Scientist in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters of the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research (HCMR). She is a chemist at the Hydrochemical Laboratory of the Institute and her duties are water samples analysis, data analysis, reference conditions & surface water classification (Rivers, Lakes). She has research interests in Environmental Analytical Chemistry, Reference conditions & Inland surface water quality classification, Greek Nutrient Classification System and Implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EU) on the Greek rivers. She has participated in 20 national and European projects of HCMR. She has contributed in 3 papers. She is a member of Association of Greek Chemists.

MSc in Water Resources Science and Technology, National Technical University of Athens (Specialization: Hydrology and Environmental Management of Water Resources) (2002-2004). During the period 2004-2010 she self-employed as freelancer geologistwith main activity geological, hydrogeological and environmental research and water resource management studies. From 2010 she holds a position as an external research assistant in Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. She has research interests on hydrogeology and groundwater, hydrology and water balance, water management, surface water and groundwater quality - environmental monitoring, hydrodynamic - water quality - vulnerability - flood hazard - erosion modeling and GIS applications.

Panagiotis Michalopoulos

Dr. Panagiotis Michalopoulos is a geochemist-oceanographer. He holds a Senior Researcher position at the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Center For Marine Research. He graduated with a B.Sc. from the Geology Department, University of Athens and completed the M.Sc program in Sedimentalogy and its Applications at the Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology, Reading University, U.K. He was awarded a four year fellowship by the Hellenic Fellowship Foundation to conduct doctoral studies abroad . He completed his Ph.D. in coastal oceanography at the Marine Sciences Research Center, Stony Brook University. He conducted his field work in the Amazon Delta. He has worked at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research where his research focuses on various aspects of early diagenetic reactions and sediment-water interactions in natural depositional environments as well as contaminated sites.

Anastasios Papadopoulos

Physicist-Meteorologist and Senior Researcher at the HCMR (IMBRIW). His research interests and experience include: regional-mesoscale numerical weather prediction; operational meteorology; water and energy cycle; data assimilation techniques; air-land-sea interaction; extreme weather events; soil erosion and mechanisms of production, transport and deposition of dust substance; atmospheric stability and dispersion. He is member of the scientific team of the POSEIDON operational system and responsible of the weather forecasting system. He has participated in more than 50 European and national funded research projects. He is author or co-author of more than 35 articles in peer reviewed journals, 70 peer-reviewed conferences papers and more than 160 other publications in the fields of dynamic meteorology and atmospheric physics. He has been member of 3 Ph.D, 5 postgraduate and 2 graduate advisor committees.

Evangelia Smeti

She holds a BSc in Biology (U. of Athens, 2006), a MSc in Biodiversity Conservation (U. of the Aegean and Montpellier II, 2010), and a PhD on microalgae ecology (U. of the Aegean, 2014). Since then, she has participated in research projects in the University of the Aegean and HCMR, having a continuous collaboration with both institutions as a research associate. She studies mechanisms that influence the structure and function of microalgae assemblages across local and regional scales in freshwater and marine systems, focusing on species traits and variation in environmental conditions (nutrients, water scarcity, dispersal). She has 5 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Maria Stoumboudi

Dr. Maria Th. Stoumboudi obtained her BSc (1986) and PhD (1991) in Biology at the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, with the PhD research performed in the Department of Zoology of the Hebrew University (Jerusalem, Israel) under fellowships. She was also a post-doctoral fellow at the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine of the Hebrew University (1991-1993). Since 1995, she works as a Researcher at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, where she holds the position of Research Director since 2008 (at the current Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters).
She has participated in 31 Research and Developmental Projects, in 13 acting as scientific co-ordinator and/or project manager. She has authored 30 peer reviewed publications and participated with more than 60 contributions at scientific conferences. She was a member of the Editorial Board of the Electronic Journal of Ichthyology and is a referee in several international scientific journals. She participates as expert in the IUCN working group for freshwater fishes. For several years, she was the Treasurer and the President of the European Ichthyological Society. She was also Secretary of the Association of Greek Researchers, and currently its President.

Christos Theodoropoulos

Christos Theodoropoulos is an Environmental Biologist, employed in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters since 2013. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Environmental Biology and a M.Sc. degree in Ecology, Management and Conservation of Natural Resources. Since 2015 he is a Ph.D. candidate in the National Technical University of Athens, Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, researching the use of freshwater macroinvertebrates in hydrodynamic habitat modelling to develop environmental flow recommendations in hydrologically-altered river reaches. His main research activities are: Hydrodynamic modelling, habitat modelling, ecosystem-based environmental flow assessments, ecological monitoring and benthic macroinvertebrates. Christos Theodoropoulos has participated in 7 European and National research projects. He has 12 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 1 participation in a book chapter, 1 co-authored technical report and 7 publications in international conference proceedings.

Leonidas Vardakas

Louis Vardakas is a Technologist Ichthyologist, working in the Institute of Biological Resources and Inland Waters since 2006. Mr. Vardakas holds a B.Sc. degree in Aquaculture & Fisheries and a M.Sc. degree in Coastal Zone Management. Since 2010, he is a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Aegean, Department of Marine Sciences, studying the biology and ecology of freshwater fish fauna under drought conditions. His main research activities are consisted by: Ecological Quality Assessments of Lotic Ecosystems, Drought & Post Drought effects on Freshwater Ichthyofauna, Distributional Ecology of Endemic & Alien Freshwater Ichthyofauna, Conservation and Protection of Freshwater Ichthyofauna and Management, Conservation and Protection of Freshwater & Coastal Ecosystems.
During his association with HCMR, Mr. Vardakas has participated in 8 European and National research projects and he has 6 publications in peer-review scientific journals, 1 participation in a book chapter and over 20 publications in European and national conferences/scientific workshops.

Aikaterini Vourka

Holds a BSc degree in Biology and a MSc degree in Ecological water quality and management at a river basin level.During 2007, she worked as a research assistant at the University of Patras and during 2011 at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since May 2013, she is a research associate in HCMR. Her major research interests focus on ecological quality of surface waters based on biological, physicochemical and hydro-morphological quality elements, taxonomy and ecology of freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates, biological indices (benthic macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton, aquatic macrophytes, fish), assessment of river habitat and riparian zone quality and pressures and impacts analysis at river basin level.Since 2007, she has participated in 4 national and international projects. She has participated in 6 conferences with oral and poster presentations and co-authored 2 technical reports.
