EGU 2019: ePOPs in aquatic ecosystems

The BG6.3 session at EGU 2019 (Emerging persistent organic pollutants (ePOPs) in aquatic ecosystems: from environmental assessment to regulation awareness at the EGU 2019) is organised by Julian Campo, Yolanda Picó, Damià Barceló. It aims at giving an overview of the current research and state of knowledge on contamination of these ecosystems with ePOPs and identifying the factors affecting their distribution and fate, as well as examples of sustainable mitigation/remediation practices, and research needs, that help to regulate and control ePOPs contamination of aquatic ecosystems. Contributions from all areas of biogeosciences: biology, ecology, chemistry (analytical, bio, environmental,...), toxicology, etc. are invited to contribute to this multidisciplinary session. GLOBAQUA final project meeting

GLOBAQUA final meeting took place in Barcelona on 17 December 2018, and was attended by 41 people coming from 26 institutions. The 10th Steering Committee Meeting followed afterwards.

GLOBAQUA at the EU workshop on RBMPs integrated assessment

Professor Nick Voulvoulis (IMPERIAL) participated as an invited external key speaker in a two day European  workshop on the integrated assessment of the 2nd River Basin Management Plans. The workshop is part of the on-going activities launched by the European Commission, DG Environment to support the Fitness Check (evaluation) of the Water Framework Directive and other water legislation, expected by mid-2019. The European workshop took place on November 6 & 7, 2018 in Brussels. Professor Voulvoulis' presentation is entitled "The EU Water Framework Directive: Policy Lessons from its Implementation in Europe".

The 9th GLOBAQUA Steering Committee Meeting was held in Agadir (Morocco) on 4th October 2018. Progress and future plans were discussed.

Assessing citizens’ perceptions on ecosystem services

The quality of freshwater ecosystems in Europe is threatened by the impact of a combination of multiple stressors. These stressors are, among others: climate change, drought, floods, land use, urban growth, water abstraction, invasive species, pathogens and pollutants. Nature provides us with services that support our society and economy, such as wood and other products from forests and rivers, purification of air and water, but also contributes to our well-being with access to nice areas, water sports, and cultural identity. These services are called “ecosystem services”. Policies to protect these ecosystem services and to enable the development of economic growth are needed. The main question GLOBAQUA contribute to address is  “What are citizens’ perceptions of ES values and the acceptability of programmes of measures within 6 river basins in Europe?”. Read more

Special Issue STOTEN River Basin

After four years of project, GLOBAQUA is publishing a second Special Issue that will be released soon in STOTEN with those contributions (among others) presented in the GLOBAQUA Workshop held in Barcelona, Spain, in November 2017. The workshop focused on chemical stressors, biological quality under multiple stressors, bridging chemical exposure with risks and modelling, monitoring and management, which are the main topics of the GLOBAQUA project and also of the STOTEN Special Issue. In this STOTEN Virtual Special Issue (A reconnaissance of trace organic compounds and metals in GLOBAQUA river basins: Effects on ecosystems and risk assessment), Damià Barceló is the overseeing guest editor, and Antoni Ginebreda and Marianne Köck are invited guest editors.

4th GLOBAQUA annual meeting

The 4th GLOBAQUA Annual meeting was held in Belgrade (Serbia) from the 16th to the 17th of April 2018. The whole consortium met to discuss the progress and the future plans.
