GLOBAQUA at Water JPI on policy impacts from water research activity

Damià Barceló (IDAEA-CSIC) gave an oral presentation entitled "Impact in Policy of RDI activities on water research" including GLOBAQUA experience. This workshop was organised by JPI in Vienna (Austria) on 30th November and was aiming to alignment of on-going projects about emerging Pollutants including pathogens.
Defining ecosystem services with local stakeholders through participative workshops

GLOBAQUA defined with local stakeholders, relevant ecosystem services (ESs) for each case study area. This task included the preparation of an elicitation stakeholder workshop during 2015/16 in each GLOBAQUA case study (i.e. Evrotas in Greece, Adige in Italy, Sous Massa in Morocco, Ebro in Spain, Anglian in the UK and Sava in Slovenia) in close co-operation between case study leaders and Alterra.
Training on using stable isotopes to investigate hydrological processes

The training course “The use of stable isotopes in investigations of hydrological processes” was organized by JSI in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 10.10.-13.10.2016. 35 participants from Germany, Hungary, Serbia, USA, UK and Slovenia attended the event. The training course was designed for researchers (master, doctoral and postdoctoral level) and other scientists interested in the use of stable isotopes and other tracers in hydrological studies.
GLOBAQUA at EcoBalance on valuation of ecosystem services

Philippe Ange Ker Rault (Alterra) will give an oral presentation at EcoBalance 2016 "Responsible Value Chains for Sustainability" which was held in Kyoto, Japan, from the 3rd to the 6th October 2016. The presentation was focused on results obtained in the frame of Globaqua and was entitled “Participative valuation of ecosystem services of aquatic ecosystems – 6 case study area across Europe”.
New GLOBAQUA toolbox to measure river ecosystem functioning

The GLOBAQUA toolbox consists on a critical and synthetic compilation of methods to measure ecosystem functioning in rivers, which can be adapted to different objectives, situations, budgets and levels of expertise. The toolbox includes a description of the main characteristics of each method, the aspects of the ecosystem they address, the environmental stressors they are sensitive to, possible difficulties in their implementation, as well as their general advantages and disadvantages. Current limitations, potential improvements and future steps in the development of the toolbox are also discussed. The toolbox is tailored for scientists as well as for routine monitoring by water managers. Our ultimate purpose is to contribute to a more functional perspective in river research and management. The toolbox is openly available and will be updated continuously through the inputs of GLOBAQUA researchers and other contributors.

2nd GLOBAQUA annual meeting

All the participants of GLOBAQUA met in Freising (Germany) on 13-14 January 2016 for the 2nd annual project meeting to discuss about the progress and the future plan of the project. The GLOBAQUA Steering Committee met as well. The event was organized by project partner LMU.
Conference on multiple stressors effects on aquatic ecosystems

The 1st GLOBAQUA International Conference has been organized by the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität (München, Germany) and the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (IDAEA-CSIC). The conference has been held at the Kardinal-Döpfner-Haus, an educational centre in Freising, Germany on 11-12 January 2016.
This interdisciplinary conference was a platform for exchange and discussion of innovative scientific findings and methods in aquatic ecosystems research. It focused on novel methods of environmental monitoring and modeling of various scopes, scales and structural complexity to improve process understanding in the interconnectivity and feedback mechanisms of climate (regional), land use (regional), economy, hydrology and hydraulics (catchment and river), water quality (river), biology and aquatic ecosystems (reach scale). Further, the conference built the bridge to the scientific assessment of implications on policy and management.
Training on rapid water screening using bioassays and biosensors

This course was held at the Department of Environmental Chemistry of IDAEA-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain) on 26-27 November 2016 and it was tailored for PhD students, master students and postdoc researchers in chemistry and environmental sciences. The focus of the course was the development and application of biological techniques of analysis for the rapid detection of organic contaminants or their effects.
